Free Spirit Film Festival
Aloha kākou,
After the excitement of Halloween passes, mark your calendar for three magical nights of independent cinema at the 21st Annual Free Spirit Film Festival — proudly known as the smallest film festival in the world with the biggest heart!
The popular retreat Hawaiian Sanctuary in Pahoa, Hawai'i, or the Big Island, will host the festival from 18 to 20 November. The screenings will begin at 6:00 pm nightly.
We’re excited to present 12 films from around the globe, handpicked from a thoughtful selection of inspiring submissions. With only limited screening time, we had to make some difficult choices, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to every filmmaker who shared their work.
Each evening will feature four films (about three hours of screening time), with an intermission. Fresh chai and popcorn will be available for purchase during the break.
Come connect, reflect, and celebrate stories that move the soul.
Join us in making the world’s smallest film festival a truly unforgettable experience!
We look forward to seeing you there!

Summaries
Corona
Directed by Lolo Martín
Spain 2024 | Drama | 19:57 | Spanish
Manuel Corona, after several casting calls, travels from the Canary Islands to Madrid to pursue his great professional goal: to be one of the leading roles in an opera at the Teatro Real. But when he arrives in the capital, the coronavirus crisis erupts, and everyone is confined to their homes due to a deadly pandemic, slowly turning his dream into a nightmare.
“Corona” was filmed almost entirely as a one-man shoot during the quarantine imposed by the government throughout the 2020 coronavirus crisis, in an exercise of what can be called “lockdown cinema”.

Larapinta: End to End
Directed by Vonna Keller, Mike Sampey
Australia 2024 | Documentary | 52:00 | English
It is time to push back against the tide of low expectations for people with disabilities. We recognised the risks we were taking were great. But we firmly believe that to force meaningful change, societies always need people willing to push boundaries.
The Larapinta Trail is 235 kilometres of sweat, thirst, and pain.
This iconic track stretches through desert mountains and dry rocky river gullies from Mparntwe/Alice Springs to Rhewtyepme/Mount Sonder and is considered one of Australia’s hardest multi-day desert treks.
The Larapinta Trail has never been achieved by an all-disabled team.

Working in a small dry-cleaning shop, she carries with her a skill inherited from her family — the art of sewing. What begins as a means of livelihood slowly transforms into a thread that connects her to the community around her. When she is asked to contribute her sewing skills for a meaningful community event, Liana finds herself weaving more than just fabric: she is stitching together memories, identity, and belonging in a new land. Through her quiet resilience and dedication, the film reflects on how everyday skills can become a powerful tool for healing and connection. "Who Do You Think You Are?" is the newest in a series of documentary films inspired by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. This film asks the question, "What are the current global crises asking of us?" and takes us on a journey where we consider the notion that the biggest problem that we face in the world today is that we don't know who we are. Respected individuals offer insights drawing on their expertise and personal life experiences to introduce us to grand ideas about who we are and the role each of us has to play in harmony with the evolving universe. This film distinguishes itself by weaving social issues into the conversation and examining how different these and our activism will be when we know who we are. Stunning original videos and the film's beautiful original music score elevate the profound messages offered for deep consideration in this important and timely film.
